A Voteless People is a Hopeless People (VPHP) is a cornerstone program of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., initiated during the 1930s to combat voter suppression and disenfranchisement faced by African Americans. In an era when poll taxes, threats of violence, and a lack of voter education denied many their right to vote, Alpha Brothers launched this program to champion voter education, registration, and engagement. For over 90 years, VPHP has remained steadfast in its mission to empower individuals and strengthen communities through political awareness and advocacy.

The program’s focus has evolved over the decades to address contemporary challenges. While voter registration and education remain central, VPHP now also fosters broader political awareness and empowerment through initiatives such as town hall meetings, candidate forums, and advocacy campaigns.
At the Iota Mu Lambda Chapter, we are deeply committed to the principles of VPHP, actively working to increase civic participation in the Tacoma/Greater Pierce County area. Our chapter organizes voter registration drives in underserved communities, ensuring that every eligible voter has the opportunity to make their voice heard. We also host educational workshops on the voting process, providing resources on topics such as understanding ballots, navigating voter rights, and combating misinformation.
Additionally, the chapter partners with local organizations to facilitate political forums, where residents can engage directly with candidates and elected officials. These events are designed to inspire informed decision-making and community dialogue. During election seasons, we mobilize efforts to provide transportation for voters facing barriers to accessing polling stations, further reducing obstacles to participation.
Through these actions, the Iota Mu Lambda Chapter embodies the enduring spirit of A Voteless People is a Hopeless People, fostering a culture of civic engagement, advocacy, and empowerment. Together, we are building stronger communities, one vote at a time.
